Heather and I are closing up shop on Teacup Vintage!

It's been so fun for the last few years, but our lives are leading us in new directions. Heather is getting ready to start a family (baby boy due in September!) and I am beginning my graphic design career at a local ad agency. While we will miss digging through racks of clothing to find that perfect dress, or getting up early to find the goods at estate sales, we are both thrilled to begin new chapters of our lives!

We hope to see some lovely faces this weekend for our last hurah!
While Teacup Vintage has taken a break this time, we are still so excited about this sale. I am back in school, and don't have time to keep up with the shop. I am sad about giving this up, but for now it seems like the only option. We are still super excited about the sale, and I plan on doing my fall shopping there. The sneak peaks are up on FB, looking like there will be some great finds. I hope you all can make it! I'll see you there!
I adore them, so I just decided to take them for a test run (and a for a few silly pictures), just biking to meet a friend for coffee and a chat. I wore my new nutcase forest green helmet, yellow vintage shorts and my sheer gray, yellow and turquoise top from a boutique in Spain.
Happy Riding!
I live for fresh fruit and veggies (clearly that means I am living in the wrong state). I love going to the farmers market and smelling the ripe tomatoes or picking fresh herbs from the garden. There is nothing that tastes better to me than perfectly ripe produce. So in celebration of summer and the abundance of goodness available, I decided to make salsas. The first one I will put up is a mango salsa. Although I really like supporting local produce, mango is one of those treats that I have to indulge in. Hope you enjoy!

Ingredients:
3 Ripe juicy mangos
2 small really juicy limes
1/2 cup of cilantro chopped
1/2 a cucumber mostly peeled
1 fresh jalapeno (or 2)
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt to taste

This is so simple, dice the mangos, cucumber and jalapenos. Chop the cilantro and mix all together, then add the lime juice and olive oil, and salt to taste. I would usually let it sit overnight to mix all the flavors together. Eat with as a topping on a salad, on top of grilled salmon, with lime and chili tortilla chips, or just grab a fork!

Happy Fresh Veg Season!
Alea and I took full advantage of a local Italian place's half price wine this week. It was fun to dress up, go for a walk, drink a bottle of wine that we had never tried before, and catch up on life's happenings. I wore: vintage yellow dress, thrifted leather clutch, vintage leather peep toes, and my grandmother's gold watch.

In honor of my gramps, I made some micheladas. These are not up to par with the ones we had in Mexico, but they are wonderful and refreshing on a warm summer day!

Ingredients:
Corona
a few splashes of Maggie sauce
2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
2 key limes
tobasco
sea salt rim

Use a lime to rim the glass, then dip it in salt, start with about 2 limes worth of juice, a few squirts of Maggie and Worcestershire then add tobasco to taste. Finally, top off with corona. Cheers to you Papa Bu!
We were digging the sailor polka dot and stripe look in navy, white and ochre.
I wore a vintage navy and white polka dot shirt, urban outfitter shorts, woven oxfords and a thrifted red purse. Heather wore a vintage navy and white striped dress, woven flats and a tasseled purse from Morocco.
I love this tortellini soup recipe, it tastes rich, but has so many vegetables in it, that it is actually quite light. It also makes enough for a weekend of leftovers.

Ingredients:
1/2 pound sweet or spicy crumbled Italian turkey sausage (about three links with casings removed)
3 cloves minced garlic
1 cup shredded carrots
4 tomatoes, seeded, and chopped
2 zucchini, 1 yellow, 1 green
2 cups finely chopped spinach
1 10 oz can tomato sauce
1/2 cup red wine
6 cups beef broth
Handful fresh basil, chopped
Dried oregano to taste
Frozen cheese tortellini
Parmesan cheese for garnish

Crumble sausage into pot, cooking until it is no longer pink. Add garlic, stirring for about a minute. Stir in vegetables, cooking until crisp-tender. Add spinach and cook until wilted, then add wine, tomato sauce, beef broth, oregano, and basil, and bring pot to a boil. Turn the heat down and let simmer for about 30 minutes. Add desired amount of tortellini to each bowl, then pour hot soup over them, letting sit for about 3-5 minutes, or until tortellini is al dente. Garnish with more basil and parmesan cheese. It's great with a glass of the red wine you used in the soup!
There are so many great traditions, from the May pole to celebrating the colorful blooms and the demise of winter, but my favorite tradition is the May Day basket. I love the idea of giving an anonymous basket of goodies to unsuspecting friends. My first May Day basket was made with my grandma. We picked some spring blooms and made some cookies. I put it on the stoop of my best friend two doors down. This year, the lack of spring blossoms and greenery gave way to a very monochromatic bundle, right down to the tasty treats. This recipe is one I found on 101 cookbooks, my favorite foodie blog. Happy Spring!
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
Scant 1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 pound (2 sticks) salted butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/3 cup lightly toasted sliced almonds
1/2 cup currants
Large grain sugar, for sprinkling

Combine the all-purpose and whole wheat flours in a medium bowl and set aside.

Then, beat the softened butter with the sugar and salt. Use and electric mixer or immersion blender. Once it is smooth, stir in the almonds and add the four until just combined. Finally add in the currants. Then, shape it into a round flat patty and cover with plastic. Place in refrigerator overnight or if you have less time, a few hours should do.

Take dough out and let stand for ten minutes. Preheat oven to 350F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Then roll out the dough about 1/4 inch thick and stamp out the shapes. If the dough gets warm, place it back in the refrigerator. Space the cookies with room and put in the freezer for ten minutes.

Bake for 13-15 minutes, checking often so they don't burn. You want them to be a golden brown. Then let them cool and enjoy!Heather and Aleahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01029426568508991496noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1641033348319021372.post-55883550022861680102011-05-05T09:00:00.000-07:002011-05-05T09:00:01.728-07:00What We Wore: Spring Cleaning

I went through my closet recently to get out some of my dusty spring and summer clothes. It feels like a life time ago that I wore something without tights or long sleeves. In riffling through I found this top, and remembered how much I loved it. So here is my spring cleaning outfit. Urban outfitters skinny jeans, vintage tooled leather purse, thrifted woven ballet flats, re-purposed vintage blouse and vintage sunglasses from a rummage sale in Portugal.
We both instantly fell in love, and decided to purchase and share it for special occasions. I wore, black tights, leather ballet flats from Spain, a Vintage black dress with flowers and Anthropologie sun glasses.
Our first stop was an estate sale, the house itself was amazing, filled with amazing wallpaper. Then we stopped off for a breakfast of champions . . . to-go oatmeal and large cups of coffee. We hit one more sale and headed over to the closest thrift where Twill caught up on her Mexican cooking. We took the afternoon easy and lunched with the ladies. Gilda, the dog excitedly greeted us and we enjoyed some great curry and goat cheese caramelized onion naan. Yum! Twill and I spent the rest of the day working on cataloguing and steaming. Whew! What a day, we hope you enjoy some of our finds, which will be at the Mighty Swell Sale in two weeks!
Robbins was working for Klein at the Palmer Paint Company and asked to create something that could make everyone an artist; Essentially mass produced art for the lay-person. The very concept sneers at "high art," giving everyone the opportunity to have their own "Van Gogh" or "Mona Lisa." Soon, the Paint by Numbers phenomenon took off, selling over 12 million kits. Today these kitschy pieces of "art" are collectors items. With their distinct color pallet and perfectly cheesy nature scenes, they are a great addition to a vintage inspired home.

I have been in love with the nature scenes for awhile, and when looking for rugs I stumbled upon the most amazing giant paint by numbers rug at Anthropologie. Over the course of a few weeks, I finally decided to purchase it, luckily it had gone on sale. Oh how I love my masterpiece, it is so cute that I can hardly walk on it (defeating the very purpose of owning a rug)!
I just had to share this fabulous photograph of her and my mom in the sixties. I drove all the way to Cottage Grove to buy a wonderfully inexpensive dress form off of Craigslist. Perfect for taking sneak peeks of Teacup Vintage's spring collection for Mighty Swell, and I couldn't resist stopping at another random thrift on the way home. I felt like she was there with me, as she was a great garage and rummage sale partner. I love you, Grandma Marlene, Happy Birthday!
Well somehow, I managed to set a water glass directly on it absent-mindedly in the first week of owning it, and a nice white water ring set in. I was so discouraged, how could it have been used since the late 1800's with only a few scratches and slight dulling of its beautiful dark wood finish and I have it for a week and make an ugly white circle? After some soul and web searching, I found numerous sources stating that full-fat mayonnaise would do the trick. I figured I didn't have much to lose, slathered a few tablespoons of it on the ring, rubbed it in a little, and left it on overnight. I woke up the next morning, wiped it clean with a damp rag, and it was gone! I was so impressed with this trick, I just had to share. This would be great for flea-market or thrifted finds with this same problem, it literally made the table good as new. From now on I will be encouraging the use of thrifted little doilies as coasters. So cute.
This recipe is a simple variation of an old standby, but I absolutely love it. I was able to find some local handmade tomato basil flatbread tortillas at Kowalski's (in the deli section) that really brought the flavor over the top.

Ingredients:
Four tortillas
Jar of pesto or homemade
Freshly shredded cheese (I used a mix of monterey jack and provolone)
Four roma tomatoes, sliced
1/2 pound boneless chicken breasts, diced
Two cloves garlic, minced
Olive oil
Splash of white wine
A few big handfuls of baby spinach or chopped spinach

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat olive oil in a pan, add chicken and cook until almost white, then add
minced garlic, splash of wine, and baby spinach, stirring until spinach is bright green, reduced in size, and chicken is cooked through.

Lay out the tortillas on cookie sheets or a pizza pan, spread a layer of pesto, sliced tomatoes, chicken/spinach mixture, and cheese on half of the tortilla, fold other half over and brush with olive oil. Bake in oven until crispy on edges and cheese is melted, about ten minutes.
